Bed frames made in the USA

Monday, January 18th, 2010

If you think everything in this country is imported from China, think again. Most of the items we sell at The Sleep Shop are manufactured in the USA. All of our mattress sets are manufactured here in the USA – most of them within 100 miles of Hickory, NC. Just about all of our metal bed frames, bed frame parts, and bed frame accessories are made in the USA – most of them in Linwood, NC. We even sell bed sheets and bed pillows made in the USA. So when you’re looking for good quality products made right here in the USA, think of The Sleep Shop and TheSleepShop.com.

White Noise Machines Help You Sleep Better

Marpac Sleepmate 980

Marpac Sleepmate 980

If you’re having trouble sleeping, make sure to notice the little details that can disturb your sleep. For example, recently our neighbors brought home a new barking dog. His barking was really distubring us, so much that it frequently woke my husband and me up. As soon as I would fall back asleep, that dog would bark again. We invested in a white noise machine. We love our Marpac 980 Sleepmate. It has two settings, and we use it on the higher setting. It completely masks the noise from our neighbor’s dog. Our other neighbor was complaining about the same thing, and I think I might get her one for Christmas. They make great Christmas or birthday gifts.

Finally, a bed frame that is easy to assemble and easy to store

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I laughed when I read the instructions for our new Duraplus Foldable Bed Frame. The instructions say, “For twin size: Unfold bed frame and snap legs into place. Place bed in desired location.” Until I received my sample bed frame, I really did not believe that this bed frame would be that easy to assemble. But it really is. Duraplus Folding Bed Frame

Other really great things about this frame:

  1. It’s strong and can support up to 1200 lbs.
  2. It’s tall! You can store all kinds of stuff under this 14 inch tall bed frame!
  3. This bed frame folds up nicely, so if you don’t need it, you can stow it away in a closet. This is unlike angle iron bed frames that don’t fold.

Take a look at our silly assembly video:

I slept so well on the mattress at that hotel. . . .

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Frequently, a customer’s night in a hotel will trigger a visit to our store. “I slept so well on the bed at the Westin, the Sheraton, the Marriott, etc,” my customer will exclaim. “I loved it so much that I pulled the covers off the mattress and looked at the label! I want a bed JUST like that one!”

Comfortable Mattress

Comfortable Mattress

Consider the following:

  • Unlike your mattress at home, the hotel mattress was probably NOT worn out. It was probably relatively new, so it offered nice support for your body.
  • You may think that nice hotels have the most expensive mattresses for their guests, this is not usually the case. Most hotels order mattresses in bulk directly from mattress manufacturers, and though the specifications for these mattresses are certainly adequate, the mattresses in hotels are rarely top-of-the-line in quality.
  • Don’t discount the effect of high quality bed sheets on your overall impression of the bed. The luxury of the mattress pad, layered with crisp white bed sheets, nestled neatly under a fresh down comforter with a clean cotton duvet cover could seriously hamper your ability to properly judge your night’s sleep.

What can we learn from this??
If your mattress is worn out, and you are not sleeping well, you need a new one. But don’t order it directly from the hotel. If you order the mattress set directly from the hotel, you will pay double what you would pay for a mattress with the same specs in a typical sleep shop. Also, “Good Sleep” is the product of many factors. Of course, having a supportive, comfortable mattress is one of the most important factors. But other factors may be just as important: a darkened room, a comfortable room in terms of temperature, a lack of noise or the addition of white noise, and soft bed sheets that fit properly. So at the hotel, was it really just the mattress, or was it the atmosphere that helped you sleep better than you normally do?

Converting a full size bed to a queen size

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

If you have a great antique bed or full size bed but you don’t want to sleep on a full size mattress, you can use full to queen converter rails to convert your bed. Full to queen converter rails are easy to use. You just hook them in or bolt them on to your full size headboard and footboard. They are long enough to accommodate a queen size mattress set and the rails come with special “L” brackets that accommodate the width of a queen size mattress set.

There is only six inches difference in width between a full size mattress set and a queen size mattress set, so that means only three inches hang over on each side. Most of the time, once your bed is assembled with an attractive bed skirt, you won’t even be able to tell that the bed has been converted. You will love being able to sleep on a queen size mattress set instead of a full size.

Mod-Adapt Headboard Plates

Monday, November 24th, 2008

If you’ve ever wanted to attach a full size bed frame to a queen size headboard or vice versa, or if you’ve ever come across a headboard that won’t line up with your bed frame because it is oversized, you can try using mod-adapt headboard plates to attach your bed frame. The mod-adapt plate kit is very versatile bed frame hardware kit that can be used with your existing metal bed frame. See our instructional video below to see how to install the plates on to your bed frame.

Bolt-On Bed Rails

You can buy replacement bed rails for your headboard and footboard. Some people choose to buy replacement bed rails if their old bed rails are squeaky or seem unstable. Sometimes replacing your bed rails is the best option. You can buy metal bed rails in all sizes. You can choose from bed rails that hook-on or bed rails that bolt-on. Below is a picture of a typical bolt-on bed rail set.

The Importance of a Stain Proof Mattress Protector

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Take a look at the warranty card provided by the manufacturer of your mattress. Every warranty card says something like this: “Warranty is voided if mattress is stained or soiled.” As a health precaution, mattress manufacturers are not required by law to honor any warranty if a mattress has stains on it. Let’s say you have three inch body impressions in your six-month old mattress set, but you failed to protect the mattress with a stain resistant mattress pad or protector. Fido, your dog, slept with you one night when he wasn’t feeling so well. The bad news is that Fido had an accident on your bed, and now there is a urine stain on your mattress. Even though you may have a valid warranty claim for your mattress due to the three-inch body impressions, the mattress manufacturer can legally deny your warranty claim, and you’ll be stuck with a sagging and smelly mattress.

So the moral of the story is: If you sleep with dogs, get yourself a stain resistant/ waterproof mattress pad like the Sealy Bed Armor. Acutally, protect your mattress even if you sleep by yourself. The stain doesn’t have to be anything gross like urine to void your warranty. Even if your mattress is stained by your nighttime tea, you could void your warranty. Tea and urine look the same when they’re dried on a mattress.

A few nice things about the Sealy Bed Armor mattress pad: It is stainproof and has a “silent” waterproof backing that won’t crinkle when you turn over. The Bed Armor is designed to be very thin and lightweight, so it doesn’t change the feel of your mattress set. It makes a perfect mattress pad for memory foam mattresses.

What’s so great about the Deluxe Insta-Matic Bed Frame?

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

The Deluxe Insta-matic bed frame from Leggett and Platt is probably the best bed frame on the market today. What makes this bed frame so great?

Wedge Lock Construction

Wedge Lock Construction

Wedge Lock Construction

When you put this bed frame together, you lock each side together using the wedge design. As you use your bed frame and apply more weight to it, the bed frame actually gets stronger, because the wedges lock more firmly together. Metal bed frames that do not use the wedge lock design tend to be more wobbly and noisier than Insta-Matic bed frames. For over three years, I have had a king size Instamatic Frame in my bedroom. It doesn’t squeak or creak, and it doesn’t wobble even when my 18 month old jumps on the bed.

Bed Frame Parts, Hardware, and Accessories

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Have you ever had a broken bed frame foot or lost a bed frame wheel? Finding these parts can be difficult. You can shop all over town, or you can visit an online store offering bed frame parts.

You can also find bed frame headboard brackets and hook on headboard brackets online. One neat product is called a Bed Hook Adapter Kit:

You can use a bed hook adapter kit to attach a hook-on type headboard to your bolt-on type bed frame.
