Hook-on Bed Rails

November 21st, 2008

You can purchase replacement bed rails in many sizes. There are two main types of bed rails: Hook-On and Bolt-On. Below is a picture of a Hook-On style bed rail.

and may vary slightly by manufacturer, but these work for most beds in
which the rails attach by hooking in to the head and/or footboard.

The Importance of a Stain Proof Mattress Protector

November 20th, 2008

Take a look at the warranty card provided by the manufacturer of your mattress. Every warranty card says something like this: “Warranty is voided if mattress is stained or soiled.” As a health precaution, mattress manufacturers are not required by law to honor any warranty if a mattress has stains on it. Let’s say you have three inch body impressions in your six-month old mattress set, but you failed to protect the mattress with a stain resistant mattress pad or protector. Fido, your dog, slept with you one night when he wasn’t feeling so well. The bad news is that Fido had an accident on your bed, and now there is a urine stain on your mattress. Even though you may have a valid warranty claim for your mattress due to the three-inch body impressions, the mattress manufacturer can legally deny your warranty claim, and you’ll be stuck with a sagging and smelly mattress.

So the moral of the story is: If you sleep with dogs, get yourself a stain resistant/ waterproof mattress pad like the Sealy Bed Armor. Acutally, protect your mattress even if you sleep by yourself. The stain doesn’t have to be anything gross like urine to void your warranty. Even if your mattress is stained by your nighttime tea, you could void your warranty. Tea and urine look the same when they’re dried on a mattress.

A few nice things about the Sealy Bed Armor mattress pad: It is stainproof and has a “silent” waterproof backing that won’t crinkle when you turn over. The Bed Armor is designed to be very thin and lightweight, so it doesn’t change the feel of your mattress set. It makes a perfect mattress pad for memory foam mattresses.

What’s so great about the Deluxe Insta-Matic Bed Frame?

November 20th, 2008

The Deluxe Insta-matic bed frame from Leggett and Platt is probably the best bed frame on the market today. What makes this bed frame so great?

Wedge Lock Construction

Wedge Lock Construction

Wedge Lock Construction

When you put this bed frame together, you lock each side together using the wedge design. As you use your bed frame and apply more weight to it, the bed frame actually gets stronger, because the wedges lock more firmly together. Metal bed frames that do not use the wedge lock design tend to be more wobbly and noisier than Insta-Matic bed frames. For over three years, I have had a king size Instamatic Frame in my bedroom. It doesn’t squeak or creak, and it doesn’t wobble even when my 18 month old jumps on the bed.

Bed Frame Parts, Hardware, and Accessories

November 15th, 2008

Have you ever had a broken bed frame foot or lost a bed frame wheel? Finding these parts can be difficult. You can shop all over town, or you can visit an online store offering bed frame parts.

You can also find bed frame headboard brackets and hook on headboard brackets online. One neat product is called a Bed Hook Adapter Kit:

You can use a bed hook adapter kit to attach a hook-on type headboard to your bolt-on type bed frame.

Full-to-Queen Converter Rails: How-to video

November 14th, 2008

This is an instructional video we made to show customers how full-to-queen converter rails work. If you’ve ever wanted to use queen size bedding on a full size bed, full to queen converter bed rails help you do this. Converter bed rails work with most full beds in which the side rails hook on or bolt on.

Different Types of Cotton Sheets

November 8th, 2008

What are the different types of 100% Cotton Sheets?

Owing to climate and geography, certain regions of the world
produce better or more desirable cotton for sheet fabric.
Following is a brief description of some of the different types of
cotton:

  1. Pima cotton is a variety of cotton developed in the southwest US. Pima is an extra-long-staple cotton that was developed from Egyptian cotton. Pima cotton, rivaling the
quality of Egyptian Cotton, is often used to make high quality sheets.
  2. The Nile Valley produces nearly the same breed of cotton as the US. Generally
regarded as the finest cotton fiber, this cotton is called Egyptian Cotton. The fibers are long, soft, and thick and are used to weave very high quality fabrics. Our Dreamfit 400 Thread Count Sheets are made from fine Egyptian Cotton.
  3. “Sateen” cotton fabric can be made from any variety of cotton, and the term “sateen” refers to the type of weave used in making the fabric. With sateen fabric, the weaver stitches four threads over, one thread under, placing the most threads on the surface. This creates an extremely soft cotton fabric with a satin-like finish. Our Sealy Best Fit sheets are made with sateen cotton fabric.

Bed Sheets: Thread Count

November 8th, 2008

The thread count of a fabric is determined by the number of threads along one inch. The thread count of the fabric determines its density and generally gives you a good idea of its quality and softness to the touch. Usually, the higher the thread count, the better the fabric. However, there are other factors such as the fabric’s content that also impact the softness of the fabric. Some bed sheets are made of a blend of cotton and polyester that may make the fabric courser and less soft than a 100% cotton sheet. Also, even in 100% cotton sheets, it is important to look at the type of cotton the sheets are made of. Some 100% cotton sheets are made from less desirable species of cotton than others. More on this in another post. . .

Caution High Thread Count Alert:

Thread count can be tricky, because sometimes cut-rate linen manufacturers exaggerate the thread counts of their products. One way to do this is to twist gossamer thin threads around a central thread to overstate thread count. Be wary if you find an inexpensive set of sheets that claim to be 1000 thread count. If sheets truly are made of good quality 1000 thread count fabric, the price will not be cheap.

Take a look at my post about a sample set of 600 thread count sheets I tried out.

How to raise your bed

November 4th, 2008

Pragma Tall Platform Bed Frame

One of the most common questions I get is, “How can i raise my bed?” Folks have lots of reasons to raise their beds. Some people want to raise their beds to create storage under their beds for sweaters, books, and gift wrap. Other people like the luxurious style of having a taller bed.

Lots of systems are available for raising your bed, but many of those systems are not very sturdy and some are even downright unsafe, expecially if used in a child’s room.
The cheap type of bed frame leg riser that looks like a plastic flower pot turned upside down is not a wise choice. I’ve heard from many customers how wobbly these are. I do not recommend these for anyone.

The best system we’ve ever seen in the industry is a deluxe model bed frame with risers. The bed frame itself is outstanding. The riser system locks in to the bed frame leg and raises the bed 10 inches. You won’t find a sturdier bed frame with risers anywhere.

Another very tall bed frame that we carry is the Pragma Bed Frame. This bed frame is really more of a platform bed frame that is 14 inches off the floor. There is no need to use a box spring with this bed frame, but you can if you want to. The Pragma Bed Frame is sturdy, but strong. We love how tall this frame is! You’ll love it, too.

Bed frame sizes

November 4th, 2008

Bed frames are designed to fit standard bedding.

In the USA, standard bedding sizes are:
Twin: 39″ X 75″
Twin XL: 39″ X 80″
Full: 53″ X 75″
Full XL: 53″ X 80″
Queen: 60″ X 80″
King: 76″ X 80″
California King: 72″ X 84″

The actual size of your bedding may vary depending on the manufacturer of your mattress set. It is important that you MEASURE YOUR BOX SPRING to make sure you order the correct size bed frame. Many bed frames are designed to fit one size only. (Some bed frames fit twin, full, queen, and king, but not all.)

MEASURING YOUR BOX SPRING IS especially critical when you are ordering KING or CALIFORNIA KING size. There IS a difference, and the two sizes are often confused, even by people who sell furniture and bedding. If a salesperson tells you that he is selling you a KING size bed frame or mattress set, DO NOT take his word for it. We cannot stress enough how important it is to MEASURE YOUR BOX SPRING! If you have a KING size box spring, it will be approximately 76″ wide by 80″ long. If you have a CALIFORNIA KING, your box spring will be approximately 72″ wide by 84″ long.

I recommend measuring your box spring, rather than the mattress, because the box spring will actually be the part that fits into the bed frame.

Bedding that is too tall

November 4th, 2008

I frequently hear customers complain about the height of today’s new bedding.  Mattresses today are taller than ever.  The average height of the mattresses on our sales floor is 13 inches.  Lots of people have beds that were not designed for today’s taller bedding and consequently find that the new bedding covers their headboards.  Other people say that their small dogs can no longer jump in the bed easily.  There are several bed frame options that are lower than standard height bed frames, but there are some other things that you can do to  lower your bed.

When you shop for your new mattress set, make sure you ask for the “Low Profile Box Spring” instead of the standard height box spring.  Most major manufacturers offer this option at no additional charge.  Low profile box springs are usually 4 or 5 inches lower than the regular height box spring and they offer the same support and warranty as the standard height box spring.

If you REALLY need to lower your bed, you can check with your local bedding store.  Many stores offer “bunkie boards” that are designed for use with bunk beds.  Usually ”bunkie boards” are only 2 – 3 inches tall and should offer enough support for your twin or full size bedding.  Use the bunkie board in place of the box spring.
